Unpacking limiting beliefs, and how to conquer them

“Do just once what others say you can’t do, and you will never pay attention to their limitations again.” ―James Cook

The Hidden Impact of Limiting Beliefs on Your Career Journey

Ever caught yourself saying “I couldn’t possibly…” or “That’s not really my place…” when thinking about your next career move? You’re not alone. As many of us navigate our professional journeys in today’s dynamic workplace, these subtle self-doubts can quietly shape our entire career trajectory.

The Hidden Handbrake: Understanding Limiting Beliefs

Think of limiting beliefs as a handbrake you’ve accidentally left on while trying to accelerate your career. These aren’t just random negative thoughts – they’re deeply embedded patterns that we’ve built up over years of experiences, interpretations, and sometimes misunderstood feedback.

Through research and conversations with industry professionals, I’ve noticed these beliefs often show up in predictable patterns:

The Perpetual Preparation Trap “I just need one more certification before I apply…” Sound familiar? This belief keeps many talented professionals stuck in an endless cycle of preparation. The truth? You’re probably more ready than you think.

The “Someone Like Me” Syndrome This manifests when we create invisible barriers about what we can or cannot do based on our background, gender, age, or other characteristics. It often masquerades as realistic self-awareness when it’s actually a self-imposed limitation.

The Harmony Hindrance This shows up as “I don’t want to rock the boat.” While maintaining good relationships is crucial, this belief can mask a deeper fear of confrontation or judgement.

Breaking Free: Practical Steps Forward

Here’s how you can start challenging these limiting beliefs:

  1. Take notice of your language Pay attention when you hear yourself using phrases like “I couldn’t possibly…” or “In an ideal world…” These are often red flags signalling a limiting belief.
  1. Reframe the Story Instead of “I’m too old to change careers,” try “I have years of valuable experience to bring to a new field.” This isn’t just positive thinking – it’s about accessing the truth that’s been overshadowed by self-doubt.
  2. Collect Evidence Start gathering proof that challenges your limiting beliefs. Did someone in your network successfully make a similar transition? Have you received positive feedback that contradicts your self-doubt? Keep a record of these examples.
  3. Take Strategic Action Start with small, manageable steps that challenge your beliefs. Apply for that role even if you only meet 80% of the criteria (trust me, most successful candidates don’t tick every box).

The Ripple Effect

What’s fascinating is how addressing one limiting belief creates positive changes across multiple areas of life. When you challenge the belief that you’re “not ready” for a leadership role, that new confidence often flows into your personal relationships, health choices, and overall approach to challenges.

A Call to Action

Here’s what I encourage you to do this week:

  • Identify one limiting belief that’s holding you back professionally
  • Share it with a trusted colleague or mentor
  • Take one small action that challenges this belief

Remember, the goal isn’t to eliminate all self-doubt – it’s part of being human. The aim is to recognise these beliefs for what they are: stories we’ve told ourselves that may no longer serve our growth.
